Arthur Suydam burst onto the scene in the seven-ties. Recently honored with the coveted Spectrum Award for Excellence in Illustration, Suydam’s immense body of written and illustrative work comprises an aesthetic that is as uniquely distinguishable as it is organic and poetic. Recent releases include Bedtime Stories for the Incarcerated; Arthur Suydam: The Art of the Barbarian; Skin Deep; Visions; Mudwogs, and The Adventures of Cholly and Flytrap—published worldwide and currently in pre-production for film.

In addition to his own works, Suydam has contributed text and artwork to countless comics publications including Heavy Metal, House of Secrets, Batman, Conan, Tarzan, Predator, Aliens, Death Dealer, Epic Illustrated and National Lampoon, to name only a few, as well as illustrations for the highly acclaimed re-release of the children’s classics, Bre’r Rabbit and The Wind in the Willows. Current film projects include Fireflies, Mouse in the House and When Giants Walk the Earth—encompassing witty looks at rural life in the American Heartland, mystery and magic— presently under option with Dark Horse Entertainment.

Preferring to grow and create on the less lucrative fringe away from commercial pressures, Suydam enjoys the ultimate artistic freedom— the autonomy to follow his own aesthetic— developing styles, characters and tales from personal experiences and limitless imagination, outside of the confines of sequential art. A consummate artist, Suydam has used his time to quietly build a body of work that is truly second to none.

An artist with diverse passions, Suydam has a rare ability to attune himself to the feel and flavor of any area of art, style, history and character. His settings are as beautiful and as haunting as his stories are tender and twisted. The techniques he has honed over the decades breathe a life and magnetism into his characters, as though the artist serves merely as a medium to channel them. Genius tempered with technique—herein lies the magic of Arthur Suydam.
